Similar to prepaid cell phone cards within the United States, a prepaid international cell phone may seem like a good idea, but most of the time you will wind up paying a lot more.
Many people are under the impression that a prepaid international cell phone is a great idea. Those that travel to other countries often purchase prepaid cell phones strictly for use while they are traveling, but these cell phones tend to come with many unforeseen problems. If you are planning on buying a prepaid cell phone before you travel, you will want to consider a few different scenarios before you take off.
Determine how many minutes you think that you will need – and stick to these minutes. Far too often, people use more minutes than they have paid for, which means that you will need to buy more minutes. While most people assume that purchasing more minutes is not a big deal, it will become a big deal unless you are aware of other hidden charges. Understand that you minutes will dissipate should you decide to roam into other countries (roaming charges), and these charges can be quite hefty.
In fact, many people that live in other countries do not make the choice to purchase a prepaid international cell phone simply due to the fact that a phone with a SIM card makes more sense. When you choose to purchase a SIM card phone over a prepaid phone, you have the option to purchase SIM cards as you go along. Purchasing a prepaid cell phone plan is not a great idea unless you know exactly how many minutes you will be using, and how many minutes will be deducted should you travel to another country.
Then again, if you are not going to use your cell phone that much (and you do not plan on traveling to other countries) a prepaid international phone may work out well for you. When it comes to choosing your international cell phone plan, you will have to decide whether you want to keep on purchasing minutes on your existing plan, or whether you want to simply purchase SIM cards as you go along.
A prepaid international cell phone will work very well for some people, but it will not work so well for others. In the end, you must weight all the differences between international cell phone plans, and then you must decide which type of international arrangement works best for you. International cell phones can be tricky, but they don’t have to be if you are well informed.
